The mostly unchanged for 2016, Subaru BRZ is Subaru’s version of the Toyota/Subaru collaborative. It’s a rear-drive coupe that is low on price and horsepower. With last year’s sales down, Subaru made some interior changes and lowered the price letting the BRZ’s fun factor speak for itself.
Driving impressions of the2016 Subaru BRZ have been mixed with many drivers taking some time to get used to the feel of it. We had that same feeling, but within the first 30 minutes, the BRZ settled in and we decided to run it through its paces.
Light on weight, light on power – great 2016 Subaru BRZ test drive
Its 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-four makes 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and only 151 lb.-ft. of torque between 6,400 and 6,600 rpm. This may not seem like much, but in a car that doesn’t weigh very much, it provides some excellent power and handling. Without the low end sluggishness of most cars in this segment, the 2016 Subaru BRZ takes off fairly well from a stop.
2016 Subaru BRZ is light, agile and confidence-inspiring and takes a little getting used to, but it does reward the driver eventually. Subaru has added a built in understeer safety net that lets you drive it more aggressively without too much danger and the quick steering and composed chassis make it a great street car. If only it had more power.
2016 Subaru BRZ fun on and off road
On paved roads, the2016 Subaru BRZ feels and handles well and has a comfortable driving position for the sports car segment. Add this to its quiet exhaust note, and you wouldn’t think you were in a sports car at all. Once you get off the pavement, the BRZ becomes even more fun, almost rally car like. Lightweight, slightly tail-happy and easy to control, the 2016 Subaru BRZ feels more like a rally car here.
Do we like the BRZ? Could it use more power? Yes to both questions. Like a lot of other testers, we would like to see a turbocharged version of the BRZ and maybe even an all-wheel drive option as well.
