At the end of 2013 we heard a series of rumors about Audi’s plans to resurrect the R8 e-tron supercar. Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi’s technical chief, was present at the 2014 North American International Auto Show and he confirmed us that the R8 e-tron is back on the track. For now, details about a market launch are not available, but we know that the new model will feature a different type of battery.

According to Ulrich Hackenberg, the upcoming R8 e-tron must serve as a tech carrier for other models. Furthermore, he added that the car’s layout is compatible with the current generation and it will be compatible also with the upcoming one that is scheduled to arrive in 2015.

According to rumors, the new R8 e-tron will be unveiled in the last quarter of 2014 and will have a range of up to 248 miles on a single charge, a significant improvement over the original prototype.

“I think electric drive has a big future. With battery tech now it is vital to have plug-in hybrids, but as batteries improve we will move more towards all-electric. I believe there is actually a competition between all-electric and fuel-cell cars at the moment. It’s just a question of where you get your energy from”, said Hackenberg.
